We’ve all heard how the media affects girls negatively, but what about boys? It’s pretty common knowledge that violent shows and movies are more likely to incite aggressive behavior in boys.
But what about the other lesser acknowledged negative effects of media, like the push to be athletic or to overeat?

Attention to appearance is a placeholder for gender. While public comments about whether Gillard’s jackets flatter her figure may be more irritating than important, they encourage other aspects of her leadership to be viewed through a gendered lens. Certainly, Gillard’s gender has been a feature of media portrayals since her elevation to the prime ministership in 2010.

Two weeks ago Amy K. Nelson, an award-winning multi-media journalist and a friend, wrote a thoughtful piece for The Hairpin.com on how women in the sports media are systematically at a disadvantage. It prompted some important dialogue on the internet and social media.
